How to Care For Cast Iron Cookware

Just like any other piece of serviceable appliance or equipment, cookware also needs a measure of caring for it to last longer and be of service well to the owner. Many forms of cookery are known to be surprisingly durable, since cookery must be tempered to be able to handle the extreme heat necessary for cooking, but one particular form of cookery ultimately takes the cake when it comes to durability, and that is cast iron cookware.

Cast iron cookware is one of the most versatile, most durable, and to date, the safest form of cookware that chefs and cooks can use, so it only follows reason that such highly convenient and reliable utensils be cared for well.

Unlike other cookery, cast iron cookware needs a one time special treatment to be done on it before it is used in the preparation of a meal. This, however, need only be done one time and then it is set. This preparation of the cast iron cookware is known as seasoning and it can be done through two methods:

Straight oiling. This process of preparing cast iron cookware involves the use of oil, fat or even lard. The oil, fat, or lard is rubbed into the pans, after which any excess of the lubricant is then wiped off. The oiled cast iron cookware is then used to cook naturally greasy foods for the first few times, such as bacon, fatty sausage and other oily food. This procedure is done at least five to seven times before trying to cook something else.

Oiling and baking in. This is the more common method for seasoning cast iron cookware. This method requires that the cast iron cookware is oiled or greased and then baked in an oven at roughly 225 degrees for about a half hour. The pan is then removed and wiped of excess oil. The pan is then returned to the over for another half hour. Just like with straight oiling, it is still recommended the first few things cooked in the cast iron cookware be rather fatty in nature.

Once the cast iron cookware has been properly seasoned and used on a few fatty dishes for the first few cooking sessions, it can be used to cook basically anything that requires a safe and sturdy cookery. Other than traditional over-the-stove cooking, cast iron cookware is also favored for use when baking as well.

Cleaning the cast iron cookware, however, is significantly different than cleaning other forms of cookware. The seasoning process that was done on the cast iron cookware must absolutely not be removed or scraped off, so this precludes the cookware being thrown into the dishwasher just any other kitchen utensil. Cleaning is actually simpler than what is done with other cookery, although it must be ensured that this is the only way it is cleaned. To clean cast iron cookware, all that is needed is to boil water inside the cast iron cookware, after the water has reasonably been left to boil, simply drain it and wipe the cast iron cookware dry.
