Saving the Rusty Cast Iron Cookware

For the most part, a cast iron cookware set that had been caked with rust sill only require a good cleaning with soapy water. For those who require that the rust be remove din the quickest time, a thorough but careful scrub using steel wool may help you get the job done faster, although this tends to remove the seasoning done on the cast iron cookware as well. Should this be the case, simply scrub away all the rust on the cookware, rinse it thoroughly, and dry the cookware just as thoroughly. Once this is done, season the cookware once more before using it to cook again.
For cast iron cookware that had been taken by an even greater amount of rust, sandpaper may be used to remove the bigger clumps of rust. Be sure to use only a fine grade of sandpaper for the job. After most of the thick rust deposits have been sanded away, wash the cookware thoroughly in warm soapy water, and then go through it once more with a steel wool to ensure that all traces of rust is removed before another rinse and drying. Once this part of the cleaning is done, be sure to season the cast iron cookware once more.
Ensuring that the cast iron cookware set is regularly cleaned and properly stored away in an environment that will not promote the growth of rust is a definite way to be able to hand down the cookware to the following generation in the family. This type of durability is something that is next to impossible to be seen in other forms of cookery, since none of the newer developments in cooking implement is as durable as cast iron cookware.
